Before we had known it, over a month had passed. We spent most of our time working; Ben during the day, and I in the evenings. We lived for the weekends, but they just weren't long enough. We did our best to make it work.
And it was great! Until I realized something wasn't quite right. It all went downhill from there.
I was seated in the quiet house at the dining table, sorting through our bills and balancing my check book. My eyes fell on a particular date, and I held it in my gaze. There was something about that number, but what? Was it someone's birthday?
The alarms went off in my head, and I jumped up from the table to run to the bedroom. I crashed against the wall to look at the calendar. My heart sank when I saw what that date was. It was over a week ago.
And I knew.
What am I gonna do??
I walked back out to the living room and picked up the phone. The other line rang four times before the receptionist picked up.
"Yes," I said nervously, "I'd like to make an appointment." The knots in my stomach grew tighter.
